Renault adds a strong-hybrid version to the Duster as it seeks to strengthen its position in India

Renault is betting on the Duster strong hybrid E-Tech 160 to strengthen its position in India's SUV market. Introduced at a starting price of INR 16.99 lakh, the model brings the company's E-Tech strong-hybrid technology to India, adding a petrol-electric option to a nameplate central to its ambitions in the country.

The proposition combines electric propulsion with the familiarity of petrol refuelling. Unlike a plug-in hybrid, the Duster does not require an external charging connection, allowing buyers to consider an electrified powertrain without arranging a home charger or depending on public charging for everyday use.

Its system combines a 1.8-litre petrol engine, two electric motors and a 1.4kWh battery, delivering a stated combined output of 160PS. Renault says an intelligent multi-mode transmission manages the engine and motors according to driving conditions. Energy recovered during braking and deceleration helps recharge the battery, while the engine can also supply energy to the system.

Renault claims certified fuel efficiency of 29km/l. The figure gives the hybrid an efficiency-led positioning alongside its performance proposition, but remains a test result. Actual fuel consumption will depend on traffic, driving style and operating conditions, and the vehicle continues to use petrol.

For customers considering a move towards electric driving, the strong hybrid offers a different ownership choice from a battery-electric SUV. It can use electric propulsion under suitable conditions while retaining the engine for other parts of a journey. The balance between the two will vary with use, rather than delivering a fixed proportion of electric driving for every buyer.

The launch broadens Renault's Duster offering as the company seeks to rebuild momentum in India. Whether it translates into stronger sales will depend on demand and delivery, while buyers assessing the financial case will need to compare the purchase price and running costs with their alternatives.

Renault's October 9 announcement scheduled the full India reveal for October 17. Its current hybrid product page displays the INR 16.99 lakh starting price; a complete variant-wise price schedule and delivery timetable are not established by the supplied follow-up material.
