Delhi's South Zone waste collection goes to an all-electric fleet under a new concession

Renvion Solutions, the renamed Ramky Sustainability Solutions, has begun integrated municipal solid waste collection and transportation across the South Zone of the Municipal Corporation of Delhi, through a special purpose vehicle called South Delhi MSW Solutions. The concession covers all 23 wards of the zone, about 190 square kilometres, and is designed for roughly 1,400 tonnes of waste a day. It was awarded on a design, build, finance, operate and transfer basis through a three-stage request for proposal.

The scope brings several streams into one contract: door-to-door collection from residential, commercial, institutional and bulk generators, along with street sweeping waste, desilted drain waste, horticulture waste and domestic hazardous waste including sanitary waste. Sixty fixed compactor transfer stations form the secondary network, with GPS tracking, RFID tagging of vehicles and containers, weighbridge weighment, geofencing and monitoring through a state command and control centre.

Renvion says the door-to-door fleet comprises 550 electric four-wheelers and 226 electric three-wheelers, and describes it as Delhi's first large-scale zero-emission primary and secondary collection fleet. The Mayor of Delhi, Pravesh Wahi, quoted in the same announcement, said 176 vehicles were being inducted, including tippers and loaders, with five wards prioritised: Green Park, Greater Kailash, Vasant Vihar, Vasant Kunj and Chittaranjan Park. Renvion has not reconciled the two figures. The MCD separately inducted 135 electric sanitation vehicles across four northern zones in July under the Delhi government's electric vehicle policy, so the claim to a first rests on this being a concessionaire fleet rather than a corporation purchase.

Renvion expects the project to create more than 2,000 trained jobs in the zone.

Renvion did not disclose the concession value, its tenure, or the tipping fee or per-tonne rate payable by the MCD, which is what determines whether the economics work.
