Hyundai i20 1.5 million milestone

Hyundai Motor India said its i20 premium hatchback has crossed 1.5 million cumulative sales since its 2008 launch, across three generations. The current i20 is offered with a 1.2-litre petrol engine, and in the sportier N Line a 1.0-litre turbo-petrol, the company said. It remains one of Hyundai's core models even as the hatchback segment shrinks and buyers shift to SUVs. The 1.5 million figure is Hyundai's.

The milestone is a hatchback high point in a shrinking pond. Hatchbacks have fallen from about 47% of India's passenger vehicle sales in FY2019 to roughly 24% in 2025, while SUVs now drive most of the market's growth. The pressure shows in Hyundai's own numbers: its FY2026 sales dipped and Mahindra, on an SUV-only strategy, pushed it out of the number-two spot.
