JSW launches AMPSTAR for electric buses and trucks at planned 15,000-unit plant
JSW Greentech has unveiled AMPSTAR for electric buses and trucks, backed by a 90-acre Maharashtra manufacturing project. An ICRA assessment provides financing context, while the launch release leaves vehicle prices, external orders and delivery schedules undisclosed.
At JSW Greentech's launch in Mumbai, we saw the company unveil its AMPSTAR brand and introduce two electric commercial vehicles, a bus and a truck. The unveiling marked its entry into a segment serving both passenger transport and freight. The company said it aims to support India's transition to cleaner transportation with vehicles designed for Indian operating conditions.
After a successful stint with MG Motor, JSW Greentech is now all set to make its presence in the EV commercial vehicles segment. Its manufacturing plans centre on a 90-acre state-of-the-art greenfield facility in Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar, Maharashtra, with an annual design capacity of 15,000 electric buses and trucks.
The company says the portfolio will span seven-metre to 18-metre buses for staff, school, city and intercity transport. Its truck offering will begin with a 55-tonne tractor-trailer, with tippers and fixed-body dumpers planned subsequently. Customers are to be offered outright purchase, leasing and Battery as a Service, alongside charging, financing and support.
An ICRA assessment dated May 20, 2026 provides a financing baseline absent from the launch release. It put the project's estimated cost at approximately INR 2,000 crore, supported by INR 1,487.5 crore of term debt, and described capacity for 10,000 buses and 5,000 trucks annually. Those figures describe the project assessed in May, not a fresh confirmation of September expenditure.
ICRA also recorded overseas technology-transfer agreements and plans to assemble battery cells into packs locally. That distinction matters alongside JSW's claim that it has developed drivetrain logic and software in-house: local engineering does not by itself establish that all technology or components are domestic.
The launch release describes a developing plant and planned vehicle portfolio. Its capacity should therefore not be read as current production or deliveries. JSW Greentech, incorporated in 2024, also identifies an R&D centre in Pune.
The company did not disclose vehicle prices, confirmed external customer orders, delivery schedules, current production volumes or a reconciled September project-cost figure in the release.
