Tata Motors raises prices by up to INR 25,000
The increase takes effect on 1 September and covers electric models. Maruti raised prices from August and Hyundai announced a rise on Wednesday, pointing to a common cost problem.
Third carmaker to do so in a week
Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles will raise prices across its range by up to INR 25,000 from 1 September, covering electric as well as petrol and diesel models, becoming the third major carmaker in a week to pass higher costs to buyers ahead of the festive season.
The company said the increase varies by model and variant, and that it continues to absorb a significant part of the cost pressure. It attributed the revision to rising input costs and sustained inflationary pressure.
The move follows Hyundai Motor India, which told the exchanges on 19 August it would raise prices by up to 1 percent from September, citing input and commodity costs, higher operating expenses and geopolitical and macroeconomic uncertainty. Maruti Suzuki had raised prices across its Arena and Nexa ranges from August by between INR 2,500 and INR 30,000. For Hyundai, the September revision is its third price increase of 2026, following a 0.6 percent rise in January.
Three manufacturers moving within days of each other points to a common cost problem rather than company-specific pressure. Autocar India reported that Tata also cited foreign exchange volatility and employee separation costs, and that electric vehicle battery costs have risen roughly 10 percent over several months.
That last point explains the inclusion of electric models. EV pricing has been the sharpest competitive front in the Indian market, with manufacturers holding prices to build volume, and Tata Motors is the largest seller in the segment.
The timing matters for buyers. September opens the festive period, when a substantial share of annual passenger vehicle sales are booked. Purchases completed before 1 September will be invoiced at existing prices, though this depends on each manufacturer’s invoicing and delivery terms.
Tata Motors has not released a model-wise breakdown.
