ToneTag puts UPI fuel payments into Tata connected cars

With rollout months away

ToneTag has launched an in-car fuel payment capability for Tata.cars' DrivePay at the Global Fintech Fest, built on NPCI's UPI Circle framework for IoT devices, which will let drivers of connected Tata vehicles pay at IndianOil outlets from the vehicle interface after refuelling, without a phone, card or separate app. IndianOil's XTRAREWARDS points will accrue without the customer sharing a mobile number. ToneTag describes it as India's first in-car fuel payment solution. The company says a formal rollout is expected in the coming months and that it will explore similar arrangements with other manufacturers. Neither ToneTag, IndianOil nor Tata disclosed how many outlets or vehicle models will support the feature at launch, when it goes live, or the commercial terms between the four parties.
