Maruti Suzuki has launched a facelifted Baleno with a Level 2 advanced driver assistance system, at a starting price of INR 6,09,900 ex-showroom Bengaluru. Bookings are open at INR 11,000.

The ADAS package uses a radar and camera combination and covers eight functions, including advanced emergency braking, lane keep assist, lane departure warning and prevention, adaptive cruise control, high beam assist, vehicle sway warning and forward collision warning. The car also gets ventilated front seats with leatherette upholstery, a new grille, seven paint options and the Z12E petrol engine with five-speed manual and AGS automatic transmissions, plus a CNG option.

Maruti Suzuki describes both the ADAS package and the ventilated seats as firsts in the premium hatchback segment, which also holds the Hyundai i20, the Tata Altroz and the Toyota Glanza, itself a rebadged Baleno. Bizmudra has asked the company for the definition of segment it is using.

Driver assistance has until now been priced into compact SUVs and higher, so the significance of this launch is the price point rather than the technology. It also puts pressure on the Glanza, which Toyota sources from Maruti Suzuki under their badge-sharing arrangement.

Fuel efficiency is quoted at 23.80 km/l for the manual and 24.77 km/l for the AGS, and 33.61 km/kg for the CNG variant, all certified under Rule 115 of the Central Motor Vehicles Rules and not comparable with real-world consumption.
Maruti Suzuki did not disclose variant-wise pricing, which variants carry the ADAS package, or whether the starting price is introductory.
