BMW starts local production of the i5 Long Wheelbase at Chennai, priced at INR 79.60 lakh
BMW India’s first locally produced electric sedan launches at an introductory INR 79.60 lakh ex-showroom, with an 81.6 kWh battery and a claimed 669 km on the Indian test cycle.
Following the launch of BMW i5 Long Wheelbase, the first locally produced electric sedan announces an introductory ex-showroom price of INR 79,60,000. The car will be built at BMW Group Plant Chennai and deliveries begin immediately.
The eDrive35L M Sport carries an 81.6 kWh gross battery and supports DC charging up to 160 kW. BMW quotes a maximum range of 669 km on the Modified Indian Driving Cycle, the domestic test standard, which returns higher figures than the WLTP cycle used in Europe. The car measures 5,175 mm long on a 3,105 mm wheelbase.
BMW says all 99 units of a First Edition variant sold before launch. That edition is priced identically to the standard car, so the distinction is specification rather than money.
Local assembly matters more than the specification here. Completely built unit imports attract customs duty of up to 70 percent depending on value and powertrain, and assembling in Chennai is what allows the price to sit where it does against imported rivals in the electric executive segment.
The price is stated as introductory, so it is a floor rather than a settled list price. BMW did not disclose the level of local content, planned volumes for the model, or how the i5 LWB is expected to sit against the petrol 5 Series LWB in its India mix.
